Description
What it is. Alpha-Irone is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 98%. Chemical formula C14H22O, CAS 79-69-6, FLAVIS number 07.011.
What it is for. It belongs to functional group 2b (flavouring compounds) and is authorised for all animal species, incorporated into feed as a premix. As with other flavouring substances, it is generally used to influence feed palatability and sensory characteristics rather than to provide a nutritional function.
Points to watch. The label must state the recommended maximum active substance content per kg of complete feed (12% moisture): 0.05 mg for marine aquaculture species, 5 mg for land-based aquaculture species, and 5 mg for other species or categories. If the premix dose on the label would lead to exceeding this level, the label must mention the functional group, identification number, substance name and the quantity added; storage conditions and thermal processing stability must also be specified.
