Ammonium chloride (4d8)

Additive Zootechnical additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Ammonium chloride is a zootechnical feed additive (functional group 4d, other zootechnical additives) obtained by chemical synthesis, presented in solid form. The preparation contains at least 99.0% ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), with no more than 0.5% sodium chloride.

What it is for. It is used in ruminants as well as in cats and dogs, within the functional group of other zootechnical additives. The additive must be incorporated into feed in the form of a premix. A related study also mentions use in sows for urinary health, but this use is not covered by the authorisation described here for ruminants, cats and dogs.

Points to watch. In ruminants, the maximum content is 5,000 mg additive/kg complete feed for a feeding period exceeding three months, or 10,000 mg/kg for a period not exceeding three months. In cats and dogs, the maximum content is 5,000 mg/kg complete feed. Mixing different sources of ammonium chloride must not exceed the authorised maximum content; the instructions for use must specify storage conditions and thermal processing stability, and personal protective equipment (respiratory, eye and skin protection) is required when handling it.
