Description
What it is. Asafoetida essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the dried gum resin from the cut rhizome of Ferula assa-foetida L. It is a liquid substance characterised by a disulfide profile (butyl/propenyl) according to Council of Europe specifications.
What it is for. This essential oil is used as a flavouring sensory additive in cat and dog feed, incorporated into feed as a premixture. It is generally employed to impart a characteristic aromatic note to complete feed intended for these species.
Points to watch. The label must state the recommended maximum content of active substance, and the instructions for use must specify storage conditions and stability to heat treatment. A group 2b flavouring substance, with limited and batch-variable dosage, restricted to cats and dogs under the authorisation valid until 2034.
