Bacillus subtilis (DSM 27273)

Additive Zootechnical additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Zootechnical additive consisting of a preparation of Bacillus subtilis DSM 27273, containing viable spores of the strain, in solid form, with a minimum content of 1.6 × 10^9 CFU/g of additive. It belongs to functional group 4b, intestinal flora stabilisers.

What it is for. Used to stabilise intestinal flora in weaned piglets and weaned minor porcine species, at a minimum recommended level of 4 × 10^8 CFU per kg of complete feed. Intended for weaned piglets up to 35 kg body weight, during the post-weaning period when digestive balance is challenged. A related study on a marine Bacillus subtilis strain illustrates antibiofilm activity against a fish/shrimp pathogen, but this does not apply directly to the authorised pig use.

Points to watch. Authorisation is limited to weaned piglets and weaned minor porcine species up to 35 kg; it expires on 1 March 2027. Storage temperature, shelf life and pelleting stability must be stated on the product label and premix instructions. Handling requires personal protective equipment (respiratory, eye and skin protection) unless operational risks are otherwise controlled.
