Description
What it is. Essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Melaleuca cajuputi and Melaleuca leucadendra. It is a liquid characterised by 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) at 50-70%, α-terpineol at 4-12% and d-limonene at 3-9%, with methyleugenol, estragole and safrole capped at ≤0.01 mg/kg.
What it is for. It belongs to functional group 2b, flavouring compounds, authorised for all animal species. Such oils are generally used to standardise the olfactory and taste profile of feed, as is common practice for this type of sensory additive. The additive must be incorporated into feed in the form of a premix.
Points to watch. Storage conditions and thermal processing stability must be stated in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures. The label must state the recommended maximum content of the active substance per kilogram of complete feed at 12% moisture. Content of methyleugenol, estragole and safrole must not exceed 0.01 mg/kg.
