Description
What it is. Benzophenone is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 98% (CAS 119-61-9, FLAVIS number 07.032). It is incorporated into feed as a premix component.
What it is for. It belongs to functional group 2b (flavouring compounds) and is authorised for all animal species as a sensory additive. As with other flavouring substances, it is generally used to influence feed palatability and standardise flavour profile. The additive must be added via a premix; the premix instructions must state storage conditions and stability under heat treatment.
Points to watch. The label must state a recommended maximum content of active substance per kg of complete feed (12% moisture): 1 mg for all species except broilers, laying hens and piglets, for which it is 0.5 mg. If a premix dose would exceed this level, the label must mention the functional group, identification number, name of the active substance and the quantity added. Handling requires operational procedures and, where risks cannot otherwise be controlled, personal protective equipment (skin, eye and respiratory protection) due to inhalation and contact hazards.
