Description
What it is. Oct-1-en-3-one is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a purity of at least 96% (chemical formula C8H14O, CAS 4312-99-6, FLAVIS number 07.081).
What it is for. It belongs to functional group 2b, flavouring compounds, and is generally used to impart or reinforce aroma characteristics in feed. It is incorporated into feed via a premix, for all animal species. It is generally used according to feed manufacturers' usual flavouring practices, without a fixed nutritional role.
Points to watch. The label must state a recommended maximum content of active substance per kg of complete feed at 12% moisture: 1 mg for all species except cats, and 0.6 mg for cats. If the dose proposed on the premix label would exceed this level, the label must state the functional group, identification number and name of the active substance, plus the quantity added. Usage instructions must specify storage conditions and stability on heat treatment, and personal protective equipment is required for handling given inhalation, skin and eye contact risks.
