Description
What it is. Flavouring additive obtained by distillation of the volatile fraction of orange essential oil, itself extracted by cold expression from the peel of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck. It is a liquid characterised by a d-limonene content of 93 to 97.5 %, together with minor proportions of myrcene, sabinene, α-pinene, linalool and octanal, perillaldehyde remaining below 0.005 %.
What it is for. This additive belongs to functional group 2b (flavouring compounds) and is intended to impart or reinforce a flavour note in feed. It is authorised for chickens and minor poultry species for fattening, laying hens and minor poultry species for laying and breeding, turkeys for fattening, Suidae, ruminants, horses and other species except domestic carnivores and ornamental animals. It must be incorporated as a premixture, following instructions on storage conditions and thermal processing stability.
Points to watch. When combined with other botanical additives, the total perillaldehyde contributed must remain below that resulting from use of a single additive at the maximum or recommended dose. Handling involves risks of inhalation, skin or eye contact, requiring operating procedures and, where needed, personal protective equipment. The content of marker compounds (d-limonene, myrcene, sabinene, α-pinene, linalool, octanal) may vary within the stated ranges, warranting analytical control by GC-FID based on ISO 3140.
