Description
What it is. Volatile fraction obtained by distillation of lemon essential oil, itself expressed from the peel of Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck fruit. The active substance is characterised by its d-limonene (66-78%) and beta-pinene (5-20%) content, and is supplied in liquid form.
What it is for. This is a flavouring additive (functional group 2b, botanicals) used to standardise or reinforce the aromatic profile of feed. It is authorised for a wide range of species (poultry, rabbits, pigs, ruminants, horses, fish, dogs and other species), and is generally incorporated via a premix. It is commonly used across different life stages, in line with usual practice for citrus-derived flavouring substances.
Points to watch. The additive must be incorporated as a premix, and usage instructions must specify storage conditions and thermal processing stability. When combined with other botanical additives, the levels of perillaldehyde, furocoumarins and methoxycoumarins in feed must remain below those resulting from single-additive use at the maximum or recommended dose. Inhalation and skin/eye contact risks during handling require appropriate operational procedures and, where needed, personal protective equipment.
