Description
What it is. Essential oil obtained by steam distillation from unpeeled fruits of Citrus aurantiifolia (lime), used in liquid form. Its characteristic composition includes notably d-limonene (45-52%) and γ-terpinene (10-14%).
What it is for. Sensory additive from the functional group of flavouring compounds, intended to be incorporated into compound feed as a premixture. It is authorised for poultry (chickens, laying hens, turkeys), piglets and other Suidae, sheep and goats, horses, rabbits, salmonids and other fish, and various other species excluding dogs, cats, ornamental fish and ornamental birds. As with flavouring substances generally, its use is typically intended to modulate feed palatability.
Points to watch. When combined with other botanical additives, the cumulative amounts of perillaldehyde, furocoumarins and methoxycoumarins must remain below those resulting from a single additive at the maximum or recommended dose. Usage instructions must specify storage conditions and thermal processing stability. Personal protective measures (skin, eyes, respiratory tract) are required where inhalation or contact risks during handling cannot be ruled out.
