Description
What it is. Dark distillers' grains are a co-product of alcohol distillation, obtained by drying solid residues from fermented grains to which part of the syrup or evaporated steep water residues has been added. The product may contain up to 2% potassium at a moisture content of 12%.
What it is for. This type of co-product is generally used as a source of protein and energy in cattle rations, particularly in finishing diets. It is generally included in high-protein cereal-based rations, as a partial substitute for grain. An associated study illustrates its use in cattle finishing rations combined with condensed tannins, without setting a recommended inclusion level.
Points to watch. The declared potassium content (up to 2% at 12% moisture) should be factored into mineral ration calculations. Composition may vary depending on the source grain and distillation process; monitoring of analytical variability (notably crude protein) is advised, along with storage protected from moisture.
