What it is for. Used as a sensory colorant additive (functional group 2a) in chickens for fattening, minor poultry for fattening and laying hens (and minor laying poultry). It serves to intensify or standardize the yellow-orange pigmentation of tissues (skin, fat) or egg yolk depending on species and production stage. Its use fits into a product-image approach for meat and egg supply chains.
Points to watch. Maximum content set at 15 mg/kg of complete feed for fattening chickens and minor fattening poultry, and 5 mg/kg for laying hens and minor laying poultry. Maximum residue levels are also set in tissues (20 mg/kg egg yolk, 8 mg/kg liver, 2.5 mg/kg skin or fat, fresh tissue). Storage conditions and stability to heat treatment must be specified in the instructions for use, and personal protective equipment (skin, eyes, respiratory) is required if handling risks cannot otherwise be reduced.
