Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Essential oil obtained by cold expression of the fruit peel of Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck. It is presented in liquid form and is mainly characterised by its content of d-limonene (60-73%), β-pinene (9-18%) and γ-terpinene (6-12%).

What it is for. This additive belongs to the functional group of flavouring compounds (2b) and is used for its sensory properties in feed. It is authorised for chickens for fattening, turkeys for fattening, salmonids and other minor poultry species, as well as for pigs, ruminants, horses and other animal species according to the EU register. It must be incorporated into feed as a premixture. As with other flavouring substances, its use generally relates to taste formulation and palatability rather than a direct nutritional effect.

Points to watch. The instructions for use of the additive and premixtures must indicate storage conditions and stability to heat treatment. When combined with other botanical additives, the combined content of perillaldehyde, furocoumarins and methoxycoumarins in feed must remain below the level resulting from use of a single additive at the maximum or recommended dose. Personal protective equipment (skin, eyes, respiratory tract) is required for users due to risks of inhalation and contact.
