Description
What it is. Essential oil obtained by cold expression from the zest/peel of Citrus reticulata Blanco (mandarin). It is a liquid, characterised by d-limonene (65-80%) and gamma-terpinene (13-22%), with smaller fractions of alpha-pinene, myrcene, beta-pinene, methyl N-methylanthranilate and perillaldehyde (≤0.063%).
What it is for. Classified as a sensory additive, flavouring compound (functional group 2b), used to impart citrus aroma and flavour to feed. Authorised for poultry, rabbits, salmonids, pigs, ruminants, horses and other species except dogs, cats, ornamental fish and ornamental birds. It must be incorporated via a premix; maximum content fixed at 15 mg/kg feed for poultry, rabbits and salmonids, and 33 mg/kg feed for pigs, with no fixed maximum for other authorised species.
Points to watch. Perillaldehyde intake from combining this oil with other botanical additives must stay below the level resulting from a single additive at its maximum or recommended dose. Storage conditions and heat-processing stability must be specified in the instructions for use. Handling requires operational measures against inhalation and skin/eye contact, with personal protective equipment where risks cannot otherwise be eliminated.
