Description
What it is. Essential oil obtained from the fruit and stems of Foeniculum vulgare Mill. ssp. vulgare, available in two qualities: bitter fennel and sweet fennel. It is a complex mixture of volatile compounds, including estragole (up to 6.1% for bitter oil), anethole and anisaldehyde.
What it is for. This essential oil is used as a sensory additive (flavouring substance) in feed or drinking water. Bitter fennel oil is assessed for all animal species, while sweet fennel oil concerns more specifically dogs and cats. A related study illustrates the use of a related tincture (sweet fennel) as a flavouring in horses and other species, for illustration only, not as a usage recommendation.
Points to watch. Substance from functional group 2b (flavourings): the composition of active compounds, particularly estragole, may vary depending on origin and extraction process, requiring quality control upon receipt. Inclusion levels differ according to species and animal category (long-lived animals, breeding animals); refer to the regulatory annex for applicable maximum levels rather than to study values.
