Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Ginseng tincture is obtained by extracting the roots of Panax ginseng C.A. Mey. using a water/ethanol mixture, followed by pressing and filtration. It is a liquid additive characterised by its dry matter content (maximum 6 %) and by the sum of ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1 (0.01-0.5 %), used as phytochemical markers.

What it is for. This additive belongs to the functional group of flavouring compounds (2b) and is intended to provide a sensory note to feed for horses, dogs and cats. It is generally used to modulate the palatability of complete feed. The additive must be incorporated in the form of a premixture. The label must state the recommended maximum content of active substance, expressed in mg per kg of complete feed at 12 % moisture, depending on the species.

Points to watch. The instructions for use must specify storage conditions and stability to heat treatment. The content of ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1 varies within the range indicated in the specifications, which requires analytical control by HPLC-UV. Authorisation for this additive expires on 19 February 2035.
