Guanidinoacetic acid (4d32)

Additive Zootechnical additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Guanidinoacetic acid is a feed additive obtained by chemical synthesis, with a purity of at least 98% on a dry matter basis (CAS 352-97-6, formula C3H7N3O2). It is the direct metabolic precursor of creatine and is marketed as a solid, with defined maximum impurity levels for cyanamide and dicyandiamide.

What it is for. It belongs to functional group 4d (other zootechnical additives) and is authorised for fattening chickens, chickens reared for laying or reproduction, fattening turkeys and turkeys reared for reproduction. It supports creatine synthesis and is generally used to support muscle energy metabolism and growth performance. It can be administered either in feed or in drinking water, but not simultaneously through both routes.

Points to watch. Maximum authorised content in complete feed is 600 mg/kg for fattening chickens and turkeys reared for reproduction, and 1,200 mg/kg for chickens reared for laying/reproduction and fattening turkeys; when used via drinking water, the dose delivered must not exceed what the 1,200 mg/kg feed level would provide. Moisture content must appear on the label, and dietary vitamin B12 and methyl donors other than methionine should be taken into account. Storage conditions and thermal/water stability must be specified in the instructions for use; a transcriptomic and metabolomic study in broilers illustrates an effect on muscle development but does not set usage levels.
