Hexyl phenylacetate

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Hexyl phenylacetate is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a purity of 97% (formula C14H20O2, CAS 5421-17-0, FLAVIS number 09.804). It belongs to functional group 2b of sensory additives.

What it is for. It is generally used as a flavouring in feed for all animal species, to shape the olfactory or taste profile of the feed. The additive must be incorporated in the form of a premixture. As with flavouring substances of this type, its use fits into a formulation strategy aimed at palatability rather than nutritional supply.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance is 1 mg/kg complete feed (12% moisture) for pigs and poultry, and 1.5 mg/kg for other species or categories. If the premixture dose would exceed these levels, the label must state the functional group, identification number and quantity added. Storage conditions and stability to heat treatment must be stated in the instructions for use; personal protective equipment (skin, eyes, respiratory tract) is required during handling.
