Description
What it is. Dairy-based raw material obtained by water removal from milk (concentration or evaporation), plus the by-products generated during this manufacturing or further processing. Composition varies with the degree of concentration and the dairy process applied, mainly combining milk protein, milk fat and residual water.
What it is for. Used as a source of milk protein and energy (fat, lactose) in feed, particularly for young animals whose digestive enzyme equipment favours milk components. It is generally used in milk replacers and starter feeds for calves, piglets or other young mammals, and as a palatability and nutritional enhancer in some pet food or specialty formulations. Inclusion level is adjusted according to the targeted protein, fat and dry matter content of the final diet.
Points to watch. Crude protein, crude fat and, where above 5%, moisture content must be declared, and these values vary depending on the concentration process and the specific by-product obtained, requiring a check of the supplier's specification sheet. Due to its water and lactose content, the product is sensitive to microbial spoilage and requires appropriate storage and handling conditions; lactose tolerance of the target species should also be considered.
