Laurus nobilis L.: Laurel leaves oil

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Laurel leaves oil is an essential oil obtained from the leaves of Laurus nobilis L. It is a sensory additive classified in functional group 2b (flavouring compounds).

What it is for. This additive is generally used for its flavouring properties in complete feed, across all animal species. As with flavouring substances of this type, its use aims to modulate feed palatability or odour rather than provide a nutritional effect. An EFSA/FEFANA study examined the safety and efficacy of this oil for all animal species, without setting a recommended use level.

Points to watch. The additive contains up to 4% methyleugenol, a point of attention taken into account in the assessment. Use at 2 mg/kg complete feed was considered of low concern in dogs and cats; in other long-lived animals and in reproductive animals, use at 10 mg/kg was considered of concern, whereas no safety concern was identified at this level in short-lived animals. These elements come from the EFSA assessment and do not constitute regulatory maximum levels to be applied directly without checking the official annex.
