What it is. Lutein/zeaxanthin extract obtained from dried petals of Tagetes erecta, through extraction, saponification and isomerisation. The active substance is characterised by a total carotenoid content ≥ 60 g/kg, with lutein ≥ 37% and zeaxanthin ≥ 36% of total carotenoids, in liquid form. The additive is placed on the market and used in the form of a preparation.
What it is for. This extract is used as a sensory additive of the colorant functional group (2a), intended for pigmentation in poultry. Its use aims to modulate the colouring of skin, tissues or eggs depending on the species and production stage concerned.
Points to watch. The benzene content of the additive must not exceed 2 mg/kg. The mixture with other authorised carotenoids and xanthophylls must not exceed a total content of 80 mg/kg complete feed for chickens for fattening, minor poultry species for fattening and laying hens, and 50 mg/kg for minor poultry species for laying. Storage conditions and thermal processing stability must be observed according to the instructions for use, and personal protective equipment (eyes, skin) is required where residual risk to users remains.
