Description
What it is. Product obtained after aqueous extraction of sugar from sugar beet, followed by additional filtration of the molasses. It retains the characteristic constituents of molasses and is enriched with natural betaine, containing up to 20% betaine. It is available in liquid or dried form and may include traces of anti-foaming agents, anti-scaling agents, sulphates and sulphites.
What it is for. This type of product is generally used as a readily available energy source (sugars) and as a source of betaine, the latter acting as an osmolyte and methyl donor. It is generally employed in animal feed to improve the palatability of compound feeds. The liquid or dried form allows incorporation suited to the manufacturing process (pelleting, mixing). Its use concerns several livestock species, depending on the formulations chosen by the manufacturer.
Points to watch. The content of betaine, total sugars (expressed as sucrose) and, where applicable, water (if above 14%) must be declared. The product may contain up to 0.5% anti-foaming agents, 0.5% anti-scaling agents, 2% sulphates and 0.25% sulphites, factors to consider in formulation and quality control. Compositional variability depending on the extraction process justifies checking analysis certificates upon receipt.
