Monensin 80 g/kg Nicarbazin 80 g/kg (Monimax)

Additive Additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Combined coccidiostat additive (Monimax) associating two active substances, monensin sodium (80 g/kg) and nicarbazin (80 g/kg, 1:1 ratio), on a carrier of starch, wheat middlings and calcium carbonate, in granulated form. Monensin is a polyether ionophore, nicarbazin a synthetic anticoccidial; the combination targets complementary Eimeria life-cycle stages.

What it is for. Used in compound feed as a coccidiostat to control coccidiosis in poultry. Authorised for chickens for fattening, chickens reared for laying and turkeys for fattening, with a maximum period of use of 16 weeks for turkeys for fattening and pullets reared for laying. Must be incorporated via a premix and must not be mixed with other coccidiostats.

Points to watch. Dangerous for equids; concomitant use with tiamulin must be avoided, and other medicinal products administered at the same time should be monitored for adverse interactions. Withdrawal-related maximum residue levels apply to skin/fat, liver, kidney and muscle (monensin sodium and DNC). Operators must implement operational procedures and, where risks cannot otherwise be controlled, personal protective equipment (skin, eye and respiratory protection) when handling the additive and premixes. The marketing authorisation holder must run a post-market surveillance programme on bacterial and Eimeria resistance.
