Monensin sodium (Coxidin; carrier Perlite, Calcium carbonnate)

Additive Additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Sodium monensin is a polyether monocarboxylic ionophore active substance obtained by fermentation using a Streptomyces sp. strain. The commercial preparation (Coxidin) is formulated on a carrier (perlite, calcium carbonate or wheat bran) to standardise activity.

What it is for. It belongs to the coccidiostat additive category and is used in poultry feed (chickens for fattening, chickens reared for laying, turkeys) to help control intestinal coccidiosis. It is incorporated into the compound feed at the feed mill according to the authorised species and production stage. Use is generally restricted to the periods and categories listed in the EU authorisation.

Points to watch. Use is limited to the species, categories and authorisation periods set out in the EU register; cross-contamination with non-target species must be avoided because of ionophore sensitivity in some animals. Associated EFSA opinions have noted uncertainties on the safety margin at the proposed maximum use level for chickens for fattening and chickens reared for laying; store under appropriate conditions and respect any withdrawal or mixing restrictions with other coccidiostats or certain antimicrobials.
