Description
What it is. Milk permeate is the product derived from the liquid phase obtained after ultrafiltration, nanofiltration or microfiltration of milk, sometimes complemented by reverse osmosis. Part of the lactose may have been removed during the process. It is marketed in liquid or powder form.
What it is for. This dairy coproduct is generally used as a source of lactose and minerals in feeds intended for young animals, particularly in pre-starter and starter diets for piglets and calves, due to its palatability. It may also serve as an excipient or carrier in milk-based formulations. Its use fits contexts where a highly digestible carbohydrate source is sought rather than a protein contribution.
Points to watch. Lactose content varies depending on the degree of removal applied during processing, which requires analytical verification before formulation. Water content must be declared if it exceeds 8%, and crude ash as well as crude protein must also appear on the label. As the product is of dairy origin, storage protected from moisture is recommended to limit microbial development risks.
