Polyethyleneglycol ester of fatty acids from soya oil

Additive Additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. This is a feed additive obtained by esterification of fatty acids from soya oil with polyethylene glycol. It is a synthetic emulsifier, classified under EU additive number E 487.

What it is for. It is generally used as an emulsifier to improve the mixing and stability of fat-containing feed formulations. In the EU additive register, its authorised target species is calves. It would typically be used at the formulation stage when fat sources need to be stabilised in liquid or semi-liquid feeds, such as milk replacers.

Points to watch. Use is restricted to the authorised species (calves); extension to other species is not covered by the current authorisation. As with other emulsifiers, storage conditions and compatibility with other feed components should be checked, and inclusion levels should follow the official authorisation conditions rather than general practice.
