Description
What it is. These are products and co-products obtained from the industrial processing of fresh fruits and vegetables: peels, whole pieces, mixtures, possibly frozen. Their composition depends directly on the nature of the source fruits/vegetables and the processing method applied.
What it is for. These co-products are generally used as a source of fibre and carbohydrates in animal feed, as a complement to other raw materials. They would be used in formulation to diversify dry matter sources, depending on species and local availability. Their use remains conditional on the stability and homogeneity of the supplied batch.
Points to watch. Composition varies according to botanical origin and processing method, requiring batch-by-batch characterisation. Starch and crude fibre contents must be declared, as well as crude fat if above 5% and ash insoluble in HCl if above 3.5%. Storage, particularly if the product is frozen, must ensure quality is maintained until use.
