Description
What it is. Wet sugar beet pulp is a sugar-industry by-product consisting of sugar beet cossettes after aqueous extraction of the sugar. Its water content is at least 82 %. The residual sugar content is low and decreases with lactic fermentation.
What it is for. It is generally used as a source of fermentable fibre and energy in ruminant feeding, particularly dairy and beef cattle. It may also be included in the diet of certain other herbivores and, more marginally, other species. Its use is common as a complement to forages, in particular to support ruminal digestion and provide water and fibre volume.
Points to watch. The high water content requires appropriate storage and preservation management, with a risk of fermentation and spoilage if conditions are not controlled. Acid-insoluble ash must be declared above 5 % of dry matter, and water content must be declared if outside the 82-92 % range, reflecting possible batch-to-batch variability.
