Pulpe de betterave (sucrière) pressée mélassée

Feed material Tubers and roots Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. By-product of beet sugar manufacture: beet cossettes subjected to aqueous extraction and mechanical pressing, with molasses added back. Maximum water content is 82%; sugar content decreases through lactic fermentation, and the product may contain up to 1% sulfates.

What it is for. Used as an energy source and a source of fermentable fibre in ruminant diets, and more generally in herbivore feeding. It is generally used fresh, pressed or ensiled, as a palatable and digestible fibrous ingredient. Its moisture level requires adapted logistics (short circuit, silage, or further drying) depending on the intended storage and transport.

Points to watch. Insoluble ash in HCl must be declared above 5% of dry matter, and water content must be declared if below 65% or above 82%. Sulfate content (up to 1%) and residual sugar level, variable due to lactic fermentation, should be checked batch by batch; high moisture content favours rapid spoilage and limits storage time.
