Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. By-product obtained by distillation of expressed lemon essential oil from the peel of Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck fruit. It is a liquid fraction characterised by its content of d-limonene, c-terpinene and geranial.

What it is for. Used as a flavouring additive (functional group 2b) to influence feed palatability and sensory properties. It is intended for incorporation into feed as a premix, with authorised use in poultry (fattening chickens, minor poultry species, laying hens, turkeys for fattening), rabbits, salmonids and other finfish, ruminants, pigs (piglets, fattening pigs, sows), horses, and other non-companion species. As an aromatic substance, it is generally used at low inclusion levels in formulation without a specific nutritional function.

Points to watch. When combined with other botanical additives, the combined content of perillaldehyde, furocoumarins and methoxycoumarins in feed must remain below the level resulting from use of a single additive at the maximum or recommended dose. Storage conditions and thermal processing stability must be specified in the instructions for use. Handling requires precautions against inhalation and skin or eye contact, with personal protective equipment where risks cannot otherwise be controlled.
