Description
What it is. Cereal grain screenings residues are obtained by mechanical particle-size fractionation during grain cleaning prior to further processing. They consist of small grains and grain fractions, sometimes germinated, separated from the main batches. Their crude fibre content is higher than that of unfractionated cereals, due to the presence of husks and hulls.
What it is for. This type of by-product is generally used as a source of energy and fibre in feed formulas for ruminants and, to a lesser extent, for other species tolerant of higher fibre levels. It can be included as a complement to whole cereals in formulation, taking into account its variable particle-size composition. Its use fits within a logic of valorising grain-cleaning co-products.
Points to watch. As crude fibre is the constituent to be declared, its content should be checked on receipt since it varies according to grain origin and screening intensity. The possible presence of germinated grains and husks requires control of batch homogeneity and sanitary quality before inclusion.
