Spanish sage essential oil

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Salvia officinalis ssp. lavandulifolia (Vahl) Gams, in liquid form. It is characterised by camphor, 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), alpha-pinene and d-limonene as main constituents, with a controlled thuyone content.

What it is for. This sensory additive (functional group 2b, flavouring compounds) is authorised for all animal species. Flavouring substances of this type are generally used to standardise or modulate feed organoleptic properties and to support feed intake; the additive must be incorporated via a premix. An EFSA opinion documents its evaluation for use in feed, without setting a specific inclusion level.

Points to watch. The thuyone content is capped at ≤0.001% according to the current specification. Storage conditions and heat-treatment stability must be stated in the instructions for use of the additive and premixes; as a natural essential oil, composition may vary between batches.
