Spanish type origanum essential oil

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the flowering tops of Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav., followed by condensation of volatile constituents and separation of the aqueous phase. Liquid substance characterised by a carvacrol content of 60-75%, with thymol, p-cymene, gamma-terpinene and beta-caryophyllene as other markers.

What it is for. Used as a sensory additive (functional group 2b, flavouring compound) in feed for all animal species. The additive must be incorporated via a premix. The label must state a recommended maximum active substance content per kg of complete feed (12% moisture), set at 15 mg for turkeys for fattening and for chickens for fattening and minor poultry species for fattening.

Points to watch. As a group 2b flavouring substance, its use is linked to sensory function rather than a demonstrated nutritional effect. Storage conditions and heat-processing stability must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures. Authorisation runs until 7 August 2035.
