Thymus vulgaris L., T. zygis L.: Thyme oil /457

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Essential oil obtained from Thymus vulgaris L. and/or Thymus zygis L. by steam distillation of the aerial parts. It is a complex mixture of volatile compounds characteristic of thyme, identified under CAS 8007-46-3.

What it is for. This is a sensory feed additive, functional group 2b (flavouring compounds). It is generally used to impart or standardise aroma in compound feed, in order to make the diet more consistent or palatable across species and stages. As with other flavouring substances, inclusion levels are set by the formulator according to the desired organoleptic effect.

Points to watch. As a flavouring substance of natural origin, composition may vary with plant origin, harvest and distillation process. No maximum content is set here beyond the applicable regulatory annex; refer to the official entry for any conditions of use. Appropriate storage (protected from light and heat) helps limit volatility losses.
