Turmeric oleoresin. Oleoresin obtained by solvent extraction of dried rhizomes of Curcuma longa L

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Turmeric oleoresin is obtained by solvent extraction of dried rhizomes of Curcuma longa L. It is characterised by an essential oil content of 30 to 33 % (w/w), total curcuminoids of 20 to 35 % (w/w, including curcumin 16-21 %, demethoxycurcumin 4-6 % and bisdemethoxycurcumin 3-5 %), and a moisture content of 12 to 30 % (w/w).

What it is for. It is a sensory additive of functional group 2b (flavouring compound), authorised for all animal species. This type of substance is generally used for its flavouring properties in complete feed or premixtures. The additive must be incorporated into feed in the form of a premixture.

Points to watch. The label must state a recommended maximum active substance content of 30 mg per kg of complete feed (12 % moisture) for chickens and laying hens; a separate value is set for other species. Storage conditions and stability to heat treatment must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures. The composition (curcuminoids, essential oil, moisture) shows natural variability to be taken into account.
