Description
What it is. Essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the flowers of Cananga odorata (Lam) Hook. f. & Thomson. Characteristic composition is variable: germacra-1(10),4(14),5-triene, α-farnesene, linalool, benzyl acetate, benzyl benzoate and β-caryophyllene, the latter serving as the phytochemical marker for analysis. Supplied in liquid form, with a capped estragole content.
What it is for. Sensory additive of functional group 2b (flavouring compound), intended for all animal species except cats. It is generally used for its flavouring properties in complete feed, incorporated in the form of a premixture. A regulatory label mentions recommended maximum active substance contents depending on species and category of poultry or rabbits, for indicative purposes.
Points to watch. Mixing with other additives containing estragole is not authorised. The instructions for use must specify storage conditions and stability to heat treatment. The additive is not authorised for cats, and its content of characteristic constituents shows natural variability (ranges given for each component).
