Astaxanthin

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Astaxanthin is a pigmenting carotenoid, used as a sensory additive under the colorant functional group (2a, EU No. 2a161j). It may be of synthetic origin or derived from natural sources (microalgae, yeasts), depending on the commercial product specification.

What it is for. It is used for flesh pigmentation in farmed fish and crustaceans, as well as in ornamental fish, species for which its use is authorised. It is generally incorporated into feeds for growing stages, when pigmentation is a commercial quality criterion of the finished product.

Points to watch. Use must remain consistent with the authorised target species; any use outside this scope is not covered by the authorisation. Pigment content may vary depending on the origin and manufacturing process of the product, which warrants checking the supplier specification before formulation.
