Description
What it is. Oats are the feed material consisting of grains of Avena sativa L. and other oat cultivars, used as such or after processing (rolling, grinding, dehulling).
What it is for. Oat grains are generally used as a source of energy and fibre in the feeding of monogastric animals (pigs, poultry) and herbivores, particularly horses. They are commonly included in diets for young animals due to their digestibility and fibrous hull. Depending on the physiological stage and species, oats may be incorporated whole, rolled or dehulled to modulate fibre and starch intake.
Points to watch. Fibre content, particularly hull content, varies according to variety and processing method, which affects the energy value of the batch. Storage must limit moisture and the risk of fungal contamination, as with any raw cereal.
