Bentonite

Additive Technological additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Bentonite is a natural clay from the phyllosilicate group, mainly composed of montmorillonite, extracted by mining and then ground and dried. Its layered structure gives it an adsorption capacity for certain organic molecules.

What it is for. It is used as a technological additive of functional group 1m, intended to reduce contamination by mycotoxins in feed. It is used in ruminants, poultry and pigs, particularly in contexts where raw materials are at risk of contamination by mycotoxins such as fumonisins or aflatoxin. A study conducted on newly weaned piglets illustrated the interest of an additive combining bentonite and enzymatically hydrolysed yeast against chronic exposure to these mycotoxins, though its dosages do not constitute a recommended level of use.

Points to watch. Use must comply with the authorisation conditions specific to functional group 1m and to the target species. Composition and adsorption capacity may vary depending on the deposit of origin, which justifies quality control upon receipt. Storage must limit moisture to preserve the product's physical properties.
