Benzothiazole

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Benzothiazole is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 96% (CAS 95-16-9, FLAVIS 15.016, chemical formula C7H5NS). It belongs to functional group 2b, sensory additives, substances with aromatic properties.

What it is for. It is used as a flavouring agent in feed for all animal species, to be incorporated via a premix. The product label must state storage conditions and thermal processing stability. As an aromatic substance, it is generally used in small amounts to support feed palatability and flavour consistency.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance is 0.5 mg per kg of complete feed (12% moisture). If premix dosing would lead to exceeding this level, the label must indicate the functional group, identification number and name of the active substance plus the amount added. Handling requires personal protective equipment (respiratory, eye and skin protection) when risks cannot be controlled by other procedural measures; authorisation runs until 13 August 2034.
