Description
What it is. Biotin (D-(+)-biotin, CAS 58-85-5) is a water-soluble B-group vitamin. The feed additive is a solid obtained by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 97%.
What it is for. It is used as a nutritional additive, functional group vitamins, provitamins and chemically well-defined substances with similar effect. It is authorised for all animal species and may be incorporated into feed or administered via drinking water. Biotin supports normal lipid, carbohydrate and protein metabolism and is commonly associated with skin, hoof and feather integrity.
Points to watch. No minimum or maximum content is set in the annex extract provided; levels should be set according to current regulatory and nutritional guidance. Storage conditions, heat-treatment stability and stability in drinking water must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures. When used in drinking water, respiratory protective equipment may be required for operators unless risks are otherwise controlled.
