Canthaxanthin (2a161g)

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Canthaxanthin is a synthetic carotenoid belonging to the colorant functional group (2a). The additive is produced by fermentation using Yarrowia lipolytica CBS 146148, as a solid form, with a minimum content of 10 % canthaxanthin in the preparation and a minimum purity of 96 % of total colouring matters.

What it is for. This colorant is used to pigment poultry skin, fat and egg yolk, as well as fish flesh and ornamental birds. It applies to chickens for fattening and minor poultry species for fattening, laying poultry and poultry reared for laying, and ornamental fish and birds (including ornamental breeder hens). Use generally takes place at the premix and complete feed formulation stage, depending on the colouring result sought.

Points to watch. Mixing with other additives supplying canthaxanthin or other carotenoids is allowed provided the total carotenoid concentration does not exceed 80 mg/kg of complete feed. Maximum residue levels are set for poultry (15 mg/kg liver and 2.5 mg/kg skin/fat, wet tissue) and for laying poultry (30 mg/kg egg yolk, wet tissue). Personal protective equipment (skin, eyes, respiratory tract) is required if handling risks cannot otherwise be controlled, and residual dichloromethane must remain ≤ 80 mg/kg.
