Description
What it is. Carrageenan (E 407) is a polysaccharide extracted from red seaweed. It is used as a gelling, thickening and stabilising agent, including in a semi-refined form for feed applications.
What it is for. It is used as a texturising additive, mainly to give structure and stability to wet or gel-type pet food. It is intended for non-food-producing animals, in particular cats and dogs. An EFSA study on a semi-refined carrageenan assessed its safety in complete wet food for dogs and cats, but does not set a use recommendation. Inclusion level should follow the authorisation and the manufacturer's specification.
Points to watch. Use is restricted to pets and other non-food-producing animals; it is not authorised for food-producing species. Quality and gelling behaviour can vary depending on seaweed origin and refining process; store away from moisture.
