Description
What it is. Citronellal (EU No 2b05021, FLAVIS No 05.021, CAS 106-23-0) is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with chemical formula C10H18O and a minimum purity of 85 %. It belongs to functional group 2b of sensory additives.
What it is for. It is used as a flavour in feed for all animal species, incorporated in the form of a premixture into feedingstuffs or flavouring premixtures. A study related to an essential oil from Cymbopogon nardus, of which citronellal is a constituent, illustrates this type of flavouring use without setting usage levels.
Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance in complete feed (12 % moisture) is 1 mg/kg for cats and 5 mg/kg for other species and categories, a statement to be included on the label. Storage and stability conditions must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures; authorisation for this substance expires on 15/03/2028.
