Description
What it is. Citronellol is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, used as a sensory feed additive (functional group 2b). The additive has a minimum purity of 90%, is racemic, and contains related components such as C10 diunsaturated and saturated alcohols, citronellyl acetate and citronellal (CAS 106-22-9, FLAVIS 02.011).
What it is for. It is used as a flavouring agent in feed for all animal species, generally to standardise or enhance feed sensory profile. It must be incorporated via a premix and not added directly to feed. A related EFSA opinion on geranium rosat essential oil (containing citronellol-type compounds) illustrates such sensory use in feed and drinking water, without setting a recommended level for this additive itself.
Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance in complete feed at 12% moisture is 1 mg/kg for cats and 5 mg/kg for other species and categories; this must appear on the label. Storage and stability conditions must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixes. Authorisation for this entry runs until 15 March 2028.
