Description
What it is. Residual product from the manufacture of tallow, lard or other animal fats obtained through physical extraction or rendering of terrestrial animal tissues. Supplied fresh, frozen or dried. When solvent-extracted, the product may contain up to 0.1% hexane.
What it is for. This material is generally used as a protein and fat source in feed formulation, due to its characteristic crude protein and crude fat content. It would typically be considered for monogastric or pet food applications, depending on hygienic and processing quality. Declared constituents (crude protein, crude fat, crude ash, and moisture if above 8%) should guide inclusion levels in the formula.
Points to watch. Residual hexane content, when solvent extraction is used, must remain within the 0.1% limit set by the official description. Composition is variable depending on the raw material and rendering process, so declared analytical values should be checked batch by batch. Moisture content above 8% must be declared and monitored for storage stability.
