Description
What it is. Date is the fruit of Phoenix dactylifera L., used in animal feed as such or in processed form (pitted, ground). It is a raw material rich in simple sugars, listed in the feed materials catalogue (Regulation 68/2013, Other seeds and fruits chapter).
What it is for. Date is generally used as a readily available energy source in rations, notably to provide taste and palatability. It would be used as an energy supplement for various animal types, often as by-products or sorting rejects not suitable for human consumption. Its use remains occasional and depends on local availability of the resource.
Points to watch. Sugar content can vary significantly depending on the variety, ripeness and processing method of the fruit. Storage must limit risks of fermentation or fungal growth linked to sugar content and residual moisture.
