Description
What it is. Dextrose is obtained by hydrolysis of starch. It consists of purified crystallised glucose, with or without water of crystallisation.
What it is for. It is generally used as a readily available energy source and as a palatability or technological aid in compound feeds. It would typically be employed in starter feeds for young animals (piglets, calves, poultry chicks) and in liquid or milk-replacer formulations where rapid energy availability and solubility are sought. It can also serve as a carrier for other additives in premixes.
Points to watch. No maximum inclusion level is specified in the official description. Variability may arise from the degree of hydration (crystallisation water) affecting declared dry matter and energy content. Store in a dry place, protected from moisture, to avoid caking or microbial growth.
