Description
What it is. Erythrosine is a synthetic colorant obtained by chemical synthesis, described mainly as the monohydrated disodium salt of a iodinated xanthene derivative (CAS 16423-68-0). Calcium and potassium salts are also authorised. It is supplied as a solid containing total colouring matter, accessory colorants, residual inorganic iodides and water-insoluble matter within defined purity limits.
What it is for. As a 2a sensory additive (functional group: colorants), it is used to impart or standardise colour in feed and premixtures. In the EU register it is authorised only for dogs and cats, so its use is generally confined to companion animal diets where colour appearance is relevant. It is typically incorporated via premixtures rather than used as a standalone product.
Points to watch. Storage conditions and thermal processing stability must be stated in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures. Operators must set up operating procedures and organisational measures to manage handling risks, including personal protective equipment, in particular respiratory protection, where risks cannot otherwise be reduced. Authorisation is limited to dogs and cats and runs until 11 March 2030; purity criteria (total colouring matter, inorganic iodides, water-insoluble matter, accessory colorants, fluorescein) must be respected.
