Eugenol

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Eugenol is an aromatic substance belonging to functional group 2b (flavouring compounds). It is obtained by chemical synthesis or by extraction from clove or clove essence, with a chemical purity above 98% (C10H12O2, CAS 97-53-0, FLAVIS 04.003).

What it is for. It is used as a feed flavouring additive, incorporated via a premix, for all animal species except poultry and fish. Flavouring additives of this type are generally used to influence feed palatability and sensory characteristics rather than to provide a direct nutritional contribution. A study on broilers combined eugenol with experimental coccidiosis challenge to illustrate potential effects on growth performance and health markers, but this does not define a recommended use level.

Points to watch. The label must state the recommended maximum content of active substance per kg of complete feed with 12% moisture: 25 mg for all animal species except poultry and fish; if the premix dose leads this level to be exceeded, the label must additionally mention the functional group, identification number, name and added quantity of the active substance. Storage conditions and thermal processing stability must be specified in the instructions for use, and operators must manage inhalation, skin and eye contact risks, including personal protective equipment where needed. Authorisation for this substance runs until 22 September 2032.
